BOFAI

BOFAI Provides Legal Representation to Juveniles at Special Correctional Centers; One release secured, other Hearing sessions ongoing.

On November 5, 2024, The Bonafide Advocator Initiative (BOFAI) took a significant step in advancing justice for minors at the Special Correctional Center for Boys, by offering free legal representation to several boys. This action underscores BOFAI’s unwavering commitment to providing legal aid and advocacy for individuals in correctional homes, particularly children.

This intervention followed a visit by BOFAI’s Executive Director, Oluwatobi Adetona to the juvenile correctional facility, where the Principal highlighted the dire need for legal representation for many of the boys. Upon reviewing their files, it was revealed that some cases had been pending for over two years without proceeding to trial, while others had yet to see the minors arraigned in court.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, BOFAI mobilized its legal team to ensure these children receive fair and timely access to justice. This initiative aligns with BOFAI’s mission to address the systemic delays in Nigeria’s juvenile justice system and advocate for the rights of children in correctional homes.

On December 12, 2024, The Initiative was able to secure the Release of one of the Boys from the Special Correctional Centre as his matter was struck off by the court following series of Pro Bono Representations by BOFAI’s Counsel.

He had being arraigned since 2021, with no trial in view until BOFAI took up the matter providing legal representations up until His release was secured.

BOFAI also took up the case of one of the Young girls at the Correctional centre for girls, Idi-Araba, Lagos state, providing Pro Bono legal representation as she could not afford securing legal services for her case. The Hearing sessions are ongoing and we are committed to ensuring that Justice is served as due.

Through its legal aid programs, BOFAI continues to demonstrate its commitment to bridging the gap between marginalized children and the justice system, offering them hope for a brighter future.
